In a dramatic turn of events, a popular crossdresser Idris Okuneye popularly known as “Bobrisky” has been sentenced to six months in prison for abusing the naira, Nigeria’s currency.
According to eyewitnesses, Bobrisky was taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday morning after a video surfaced showing him spraying naira notes at an event. The EFCC deemed Bobrisky’s actions as disrespectful and illegal, leading to his arrest and subsequent trial. During the trial, Bobrisky pleaded guilty to the charges, apologizing for his actions and acknowledging that he had made a mistake.
The presiding judge, Justice Abimbola Awogboro, took into account Bobrisky’s guilty plea and apology, but still handed down a six-month prison sentence. The defendant’s actions were a clear violation of the law and showed disrespect to the naira, which is a symbol of our national identity,” Justice Abimbola Awogboro stated. “While I acknowledge his apology and guilty plea, I must still impose a sentence that reflects the seriousness of the offense.
Bobrisky was led away in handcuffs immediately after the sentencing and is currently being held at a correctional facility in Lagos.
