Ethics policy

Sources

We protect confidential sources who face genuine risk. We identify sources whenever possible and explain when anonymity is granted and why.

Conflicts of interest

Staff disclose any personal, financial or political interest that could affect coverage. We do not report on organisations in which we hold a material interest.

Sensitivity

We exercise care with victims of trauma, minors and vulnerable sources. We do not publish names of minors in crime reporting without exceptional public-interest justification.

Images

We do not publish gratuitously violent or graphic imagery. Decisions to publish sensitive images are made by a senior editor on public-interest grounds.
