A quiet but sharp message went out to Nigerian banks this week “stop running automated AML, and start running AI-native AML”.

On the surface it is a compliance conversation. Underneath, it is the most useful business lesson of the month.

Here is the difference. Automated means you took the old way of working and made it faster. AI-native means you rebuilt how the work actually gets done.

Most businesses are doing the first one and calling it the second. They bolt a chatbot onto a customer service that was never clear. They schedule the same generic content harder. They automate follow-up on leads they never understood. Then they wonder why the numbers did not move.

Think about how most businesses adopt a new tool. They hear something good, they sign up, they switch it on, and they expect the results to change by themselves. But nothing underneath changed.

The same unclear offer, the same messy process, the same customers confused about what to do next. All that changed was the speed. And speed applied to a mess just makes a bigger mess.

Speed is not strategy. If the process is broken, AI does not fix it. It scales it.

The banks are being told this because the stakes are high.

But the same truth runs through every small business.

The tools are cheap now. The advantage is not access to AI. It is knowing exactly which work to hand it.

The honest starting point is uncomfortable.

Before you automate, you have to admit which parts of your business were never really working, the vague offer, the slow replies, the leads you never followed up.

Automation does not hide those things. It puts them on display, at scale, where customers can see them. Fix the thinking first, and the tools finally have something worth multiplying.

Start with the work, not the tool. Find the task that quietly eats your hours, the same questions, the same follow-ups, the same admin. Rebuild that around the outcome you actually want. Then let AI run it.

At Auxi Sherpa, we help businesses automate the work that repeats, answer customers, follow up, handle the admin, so the owner is free for the part only a human can do.

The banks have regulators to push them. You have the market. Either way, the clock is running.
