Segunda División is Spain's second-highest league in men's football. It forms part of the country's professional league structure and gives clubs a route into La Liga, the top division. For teams relegated from the elite, it is also the starting point for rebuilding and seeking a return.

The competition brings together clubs with very different histories and resources. Former top-flight regulars can face smaller provincial teams, ambitious newcomers and sides whose strongest connection is to their local community. That mix gives the division an identity beyond its place below La Liga.
Where Segunda División fits

Established in 1929, Segunda División has been a central part of Spanish league football for generations. Its format has changed over time, but its main purpose has remained the same: to connect the top flight with the levels beneath it through promotion and relegation.
LaLiga, the organisation responsible for Spain's two leading professional divisions, runs the competition. The league's commercial name can change with sponsorship agreements, but Segunda División remains its familiar sporting name. It is also often called the Spanish second division in English.
Below it sits Primera Federación, a separate competition administered by the Royal Spanish Football Federation. Despite the similar wording, Segunda División should not be confused with Segunda Federación, which occupies a lower level of the Spanish pyramid.
How the league season works
The established format has 22 clubs. Each team plays every other team twice, once at home and once away, producing a 42-match regular season. A win earns three points, a draw earns one and a defeat earns none.
The league table determines which teams advance, which enter the promotion playoffs and which drop into the division below. When clubs finish level on points, competition rules use tiebreakers, including results between the teams concerned, to establish their positions.
A schedule of that length rewards consistency as well as quality. Squad depth, away form and the ability to recover from poor runs can all shape a season. Clubs must sustain their performances across months rather than rely on a short burst of strong results.
Promotion and relegation explained
The top two eligible clubs earn automatic promotion to La Liga. A third promotion place is decided through playoffs involving the eligible teams finishing third to sixth.
Under the standard format, the third-placed side faces the sixth-placed side, while fourth meets fifth. The semifinals and final are played over two legs. The eventual winner joins the two automatically promoted clubs in the top flight.
At the other end of the table, the bottom four clubs are relegated to Primera Federación. This creates two distinct battles within the same competition: one for access to the elite and another to preserve second-tier status.
Reserve teams face special restrictions within Spain's league system. They cannot play in the same division as their parent club, so promotion eligibility is not always determined by finishing position alone.
Why the division matters

Segunda División offers a demanding environment for developing players and coaches. Young footballers can gain sustained senior experience, while established professionals bring knowledge from other leagues and levels of the game.
Promotion carries major sporting and financial importance, offering access to top-flight competition and greater commercial exposure. Relegation can force clubs to reassess budgets and squad plans.
For supporters, however, the division is more than a route elsewhere. Regional rivalries, historic grounds and strong local loyalties give its matches lasting significance. Understanding Segunda División means recognising both its role in the national pyramid and the communities that sustain its clubs.
