Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia and President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea signed a joint declaration in Asmara formally ending the state of war that had persisted since the border conflict of 1998 to 2000.
Telephone connections between the two countries were restored within days and commercial flights resumed for the first time in twenty years. Families separated for a generation crossed the frontier at Zalambessa.
Mr Abiy was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize the following year, though relations later deteriorated during the conflict in Tigray.
