Sudan's Transitional Military Council and the Forces of Freedom and Change signed a constitutional declaration in Khartoum providing for a joint sovereign council and a civilian-led cabinet during a transition of just over three years.

The agreement followed the removal of President Omar al-Bashir in April after months of protest sparked by increases in the price of bread and fuel, and a violent dispersal of the sit-in outside army headquarters in June.

Abdalla Hamdok, an economist who had worked at the United Nations, was appointed prime minister. The transition was later interrupted by a military takeover.
