The death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes, set off the largest wave of protest in the United States in decades.
Video recorded by a bystander circulated widely and demonstrations spread to hundreds of American cities and to Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. Officer Derek Chauvin was later convicted of murder.
The protests prompted police reform legislation in several states, corporate diversity commitments, and a wider public argument about monuments, policing budgets and racial inequality.
