Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, died at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican, twelve years after his election as the first pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit to hold the office.
His papacy emphasised migration, poverty and the environment, notably in the 2015 encyclical Laudato Si'. He opened Vatican finances to external audit and expanded the role of laypeople in curial governance, while facing continued criticism over the handling of clerical abuse cases.
Mourners filed through St Peter's Basilica before the funeral, and the conclave to choose a successor followed within weeks.
