Opposition forces led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham entered Damascus after an offensive that took Aleppo, Hama and Homs in under two weeks, ending the rule of Bashar al-Assad and of his family since 1970.
Mr Assad left the country for Russia. Crowds opened the Saydnaya prison, where thousands had been detained, and toppled statues in city squares. Israel struck Syrian military assets and Turkish-backed factions moved against Kurdish forces in the north.
A transitional administration took shape in Damascus amid unresolved questions about minority protection, sanctions relief and the reconstruction of a country devastated by thirteen years of war.
