Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland at the age of 96, after a reign of seventy years and 214 days, the longest of any British monarch.
She acceded in 1952 and presided over the transformation of the Commonwealth, the end of empire and fifteen British prime ministers. Charles III became king immediately on her death.
