A group of heavily armed attackers moved through southern Mumbai, opening fire at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station, the Leopold Cafe, the Taj Mahal Palace and Oberoi Trident hotels, and a Jewish community centre.
Indian commandos fought room-to-room battles in the hotels for close to sixty hours before the last positions were cleared. More than 160 people were killed and hundreds injured, among them foreign nationals from more than a dozen countries.
The attacks strained relations between India and Pakistan and prompted a substantial overhaul of Indian coastal security, urban policing and counter-terrorism coordination in the years that followed.
