Pastor Jimi Odukoya is a Nigerian pastor and actor whose public life spans the pulpit and the screen. He leads The Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos, the Christian congregation founded by his parents, Taiwo and Bimbo Odukoya. Outside church, he is known professionally as Jimmy Odukoya, the name used in his acting career.

His background places him within two prominent areas of Nigerian public life: Pentecostal Christianity and the entertainment industry. Although many people first encountered him through his family’s ministry, his film work brought him to a different audience, including viewers outside Nigeria.

Family Background and Education

Odukoya grew up in a family closely associated with Christian teaching and pastoral leadership. His father, Taiwo Odukoya, was the founding senior pastor of The Fountain of Life Church. His mother, Bimbo Odukoya, was a pastor and a widely recognised speaker on marriage, relationships and family life.

Bimbo Odukoya died following the Sosoliso plane crash in 2005. Her death was a major loss to the family and to the many Nigerians who followed her ministry. Both parents remain central to the history of the church their son now leads.

Odukoya pursued higher education in the United States at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He studied business administration and earned an MBA. His years in the United States also included involvement in church ministry, giving him experience beyond the Nigerian congregation in which he had grown up.

Ministry and Church Leadership

Before becoming senior pastor, Odukoya served in ministry at The Fountain of Life Church. His pastoral work therefore preceded his appointment to its highest leadership position, rather than beginning with his succession to his father.

He became senior pastor in 2023 following Taiwo Odukoya’s death. His sister, Tolu Odukoya, was named associate senior pastor. The appointments placed a new generation of the family in leadership while maintaining the congregation’s connection to its founders.

As senior pastor, Odukoya’s responsibilities include preaching, spiritual guidance and leadership of the church community. The Fountain of Life Church is part of Nigeria’s Pentecostal Christian landscape, where worship, biblical teaching and community life are closely connected.

His position carries both an institutional responsibility and a family legacy. Understanding his ministry requires looking at his own service as well as the work his parents established.

Acting Career and International Recognition

Alongside ministry, Odukoya built a career in Nollywood, Nigeria’s film industry. Acting gave him a separate professional identity, even as his family name remained familiar to church audiences. His screen career includes Nigerian productions and a major Hollywood film.

His most internationally visible role came in The Woman King, the 2022 historical action drama directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and starring Viola Davis. Odukoya played Oba Ade, an antagonist in a story centred on the Agojie, the women warriors of the Kingdom of Dahomey.

The role introduced him to a wider international audience. It also remains a clear reference point for viewers seeking to understand his work as an actor beyond his pastoral identity.

A Public Life Across Two Professions

Odukoya’s biography is distinguished by the coexistence of religious leadership and performance. His church role connects him to an established Nigerian ministry, while his acting credits place him within a creative industry with a global audience.

Neither part fully explains his public identity on its own. He is both the leader of a congregation shaped by his parents and an actor whose work has reached beyond Nigeria.
