Bimbo Odukoya became a prominent voice in Nigerian Christian broadcasting through her direct approach to love, courtship and family life. Her programme, Single and Married, brought relationship teaching into homes and helped establish her reputation beyond the pulpit.

Although her life was cut short in 2005, her name remains closely associated with Christian marriage guidance. Her story also forms an important part of the history of The Fountain of Life Church, which she helped build alongside her husband, Taiwo Odukoya.

Early Life and Family

Born on September 12, 1960, Bimbo Odukoya was Nigerian. Her public identity developed around Christian ministry, particularly her work with single adults, married couples and families.

She married Taiwo Odukoya in 1984. They had three children: Toluwani, commonly known as Tolu, Jimmy and Tobi. Marriage and motherhood were central parts of her personal life, alongside her responsibilities as a pastor and public speaker.

Jimmy Odukoya later became known for acting and Christian ministry. However, his mother's reputation was already firmly established during her lifetime through her own teaching, broadcasting and work within the church.

Building a Christian Ministry

Bimbo and Taiwo Odukoya established The Fountain of Life Church in Lagos in 1992. The church became the main base for their pastoral work, with Bimbo taking a prominent role in teaching and ministering to its congregation.

Her work was rooted in Pentecostal Christianity. She applied biblical teaching to everyday concerns, especially the decisions people faced when choosing partners, preparing for marriage and raising families.

Relationships were not simply a side topic in her public ministry. They became its defining focus, giving her a recognisable voice within Nigeria's wider Christian community.

Her reach also extended through speaking engagements, books and recorded messages. These formats allowed people outside her congregation to encounter her teaching and helped turn a church-based ministry into a broader public platform.

Single and Married

Single and Married was the programme most closely associated with Odukoya. It addressed relationships from a Christian perspective and spoke to both unmarried people and those already navigating married life.

Her teaching encouraged listeners to consider faith and character when making relationship decisions. Rather than treating marriage only as a romantic goal, she presented it as a commitment involving responsibility, preparation and shared values.

Her accessible style was important to her appeal. She discussed personal matters in straightforward language, bringing subjects often regarded as private into a public setting shaped by religious teaching.

Television gave this work a reach beyond regular church attendance. For many viewers, Odukoya was known first as a relationship teacher and broadcaster, rather than solely as a pastor at The Fountain of Life Church.

Death and Lasting Legacy

Odukoya was a passenger on Sosoliso Airlines Flight 1145, which crashed at Port Harcourt on December 10, 2005. She survived the initial crash but died from her injuries on December 11. She was 45.

Her death brought an abrupt end to a ministry that had made her widely recognised in Nigeria. It also left her husband and their three children to carry forward their family life without her.

Her legacy rests chiefly on the relationship teaching that defined her career. Her books and recorded messages preserve her emphasis on approaching love and marriage through Christian faith.

Remembered both as Jimmy Odukoya's mother and as a religious figure in her own right, Bimbo Odukoya occupies a lasting place in Nigerian Christian broadcasting. Her contribution was to make discussions about courtship, marriage and family a central part of her public ministry.
