His international reputation has been shaped particularly by penalty saves and assured performances against more established African teams. For Equatorial Guinea, he has occupied a demanding position in a side that has repeatedly challenged expectations at continental tournaments.
Early life and football development

Owono was born on 1 March 2001 in Bata, Equatorial Guinea. He moved to Spain as a child and developed his football in the Basque Country, a region with a strong network of youth clubs and professional academies.
His early development included time at Antiguoko, the San Sebastián youth club known for developing players for professional football. He later joined the Alavés system, where his route towards senior football involved academy training and experience below the top division.
That background gave his career two distinct foundations: a football education in Spain and an international identity rooted in his country of birth. He went on to represent Equatorial Guinea at senior level while still a teenager.
Building a club career in Spain
Owono gained senior experience with San Ignacio, a club linked to Alavés, and subsequently played for Alavés B. Those teams provided opportunities to move beyond youth football and face the physical and tactical demands of competitive senior matches.
For a young goalkeeper, reserve and lower-division football can be an important bridge to the professional first team. Owono's progression followed that route rather than beginning with an immediate, permanent place in a top-flight starting lineup.
He made his La Liga debut for Alavés against Real Sociedad in January 2022, in a match that finished 1-1. The appearance marked a significant step in his development, taking him from the club's wider development structure into Spain's highest domestic division.
Breakthrough with Equatorial Guinea
Owono made his senior international debut in 2018. His major breakthrough came at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, which was held in Cameroon in early 2022 following its postponement.
He was part of the Equatorial Guinea team that defeated defending champions Algeria 1-0 during the group stage. The result was one of the tournament's biggest surprises and helped establish the team as a difficult opponent for more fancied sides.
Owono then played a decisive role against Mali in the round of 16. After a goalless match, he helped Equatorial Guinea win the penalty shootout, saving the final attempt from Falaye Sacko to secure a quarter-final place.
The campaign ended with defeat by Senegal, the eventual champions. Nevertheless, the run gave Owono a much larger international profile and made his goalkeeping central to the story of Equatorial Guinea's tournament.

Owono returned for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, staged in Ivory Coast in early 2024. Equatorial Guinea finished above Nigeria and the host nation in their group, with a striking 4-0 victory over Ivory Coast among their results.
The team subsequently lost to Guinea in the round of 16. Even without another quarter-final appearance, the campaign reinforced Equatorial Guinea's capacity to compete against leading African football nations.
Owono's career illustrates how club development and international opportunity can advance at different speeds. His foundations were built in Spanish football, but his most widely recognised achievements have come while wearing Equatorial Guinea's colours.
