Jimmy Odukoya: Biography, Career and Church Leadership

His public life brings together two distinct kinds of work: leading a congregation and performing for film audiences. Although his family name has long been associated with Nigerian Christianity, acting introduced him to viewers who knew little about his church background.

Family Background and Education

Odukoya is the son of Taiwo and Bimbo Odukoya, the pastors who founded The Fountain of Life Church in 1992. The church, based in Ilupeju, Lagos, became an established Pentecostal congregation, with preaching and programmes focused on Christian faith, family life and personal development.

His mother, Bimbo, was particularly well known for her teaching on relationships and marriage. She died following the Sosoliso Airlines crash in December 2005. Her ministry and broadcasts had made her a familiar voice to many Nigerians beyond the church itself.

Growing up in this family gave Jimmy an early connection to church life and public ministry. He later studied at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he earned a degree in business administration and an MBA. His time in the United States formed part of his education before his professional work in Nigeria.

Acting and International Recognition

Odukoya developed an acting career in Nollywood, working in Nigerian film productions before gaining wider international attention. His screen work includes The Bling Lagosians, a film centred on a wealthy Lagos family and the pressures surrounding its social standing.

His most internationally visible role came in the 2022 film The Woman King, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and starring Viola Davis. He played Oba Ade, an opposing military leader in a story inspired by the women warriors of the Kingdom of Dahomey.

The role placed him in a large international production alongside an ensemble of African and international performers. It also required a physical performance, adding action filmmaking to the dramatic work for which Nigerian audiences had known him.

His acting career is a significant part of his biography in its own right. Rather than being known only through his parents, he established a separate professional identity through screen roles and work with filmmakers outside the church.

Leadership at The Fountain of Life Church

Following Taiwo Odukoya's death in 2023, Jimmy was named senior pastor of The Fountain of Life Church. His sister, Tolu Odukoya-Ijogun, was named associate senior pastor. The appointments placed a new generation of the family in leadership at the congregation their parents had founded.

Jimmy's connection to ministry predated his appointment as senior pastor. He had already served as a pastor within the church, so the transition represented an expansion of his responsibilities rather than his first involvement in pastoral work.

As senior pastor, his responsibilities include preaching, spiritual guidance and leadership of the church community. The position also connects him to the institution's longstanding identity and the pastoral legacy of both his parents.

Personal Life and Public Identity

Odukoya married Kemi Banjoko in 2013. While his family background remains central to public interest in him, his biography extends across education, entertainment and Christian leadership.

He occupies an unusual place in Nigerian public life as both a working actor with international credits and the leader of an established Lagos church. Those parallel careers remain the defining features of his public identity.
