Broda Shaggi has finally told the story of the day a stray bullet took him off the screen for more than seven months.
The comedian, whose real name is Samuel Animashaun Perry, posted a long video on Wednesday night on his YouTube channel and his Instagram page. He spoke for the first time about the shooting, the surgeries and the fear that his career was finished.
He said it happened on 9 March 2026, a Sunday, in the Sango-Ota area of Ogun State.
He had gone out for a brand activation, the kind of job he does between skits. They had finished, he said, and the team was already on the expressway, stuck in traffic in front of a crowd.
"I heard a loud bang," he said. "Everywhere was silent. I could still see people moving outside, people talking, but I couldn't hear what they were saying. It was total silence in the car. Then I touched my hip and saw blood."
That was when he knew. A stray bullet had found him.
He said he passed out before they reached a hospital and did not know how the car got there. What he remembers is praying.
"We got to the first hospital where first aid was administered," he said. He was later moved to another hospital in Ikeja with better equipment.
What he wanted in that moment was small and impossible at once. "I was sweating, I was holding my leg, I was seeing blood, and all I wanted to hear was a doctor telling me, 'Samuel, you'll be fine,'" he said.
By then, the leg had stopped obeying him.
For a man whose work is his body, that was the deeper cut. Broda Shaggi dances, drums, falls, runs and takes knocks for a living. He said the thought that came was blunt. "I didn't want to die."
He was treated in Nigeria, but four months later he still could not move the leg. So he travelled to Dubai.
There, a doctor examined him and told him the markers were not regulated enough for surgery, then said he would go ahead anyway. The comedian said that sentence gave him hope.
He had the operation. He stood with support on the second day, and by the third day he was walking on crutches.
He is still on those crutches. He can stand without them now, and walk, but he holds them for support because he has not fully recovered.
"I have been grateful because it could have been worse," he said. "It's a new beginning for me. I don't want you guys to feel sad for me. I am grateful to be alive."
He also said the months in bed broke something that eight years of work had built.
"Since 2018 till date I never rest," he said. "If I'm not writing, I'm shooting. If I'm not shooting, I'm in the studio making music. If I'm not making music, I'm travelling for something."
He spoke about watching his colleagues on his phone while he could not stand. "I would laugh," he said, "and sometimes I would just start to cry because I wasn't sure if I would still be able to do all these things they were doing again."
The Ogun State Police Command said it could not establish whether the shooting happened inside its jurisdiction, and asked the public not to spread unverified information while investigations continued. A police source had confirmed in March that the comedian suffered a gunshot wound. No one has been publicly named in connection with the shooting.
The video has been shared widely since it went up, and the comment sections have filled with colleagues and fans saying the same thing in different words. He was missed, and they are glad he is standing.
There is a hard detail inside this story that has little to do with celebrity. A man was hit by a bullet in traffic on a Nigerian expressway, and seven months later nobody has been charged.
Broda Shaggi says he is coming back. For now, he is on crutches, telling the story himself, and grateful.
