For Tenerife supporters, his significance begins with his contribution on the pitch during an outstanding period in the club’s history. His subsequent work in coaching, recruitment and club leadership has given him experience of professional football from several different perspectives.

Miñambres was born on 29 April 1965 in Astorga, in the Spanish province of León. His route to the highest level took him through football outside Spain’s biggest clubs before he established himself in the top division.
He played for Sporting Gijón before joining Tenerife in 1989. The move became the defining chapter of his playing career, placing him at a club that was establishing itself in La Liga and would go on to compete against major European opponents.
A midfielder, Miñambres became a durable presence in the Tenerife side. His long association with the team made him part of a generation remembered for expanding the ambitions of a club based in the Canary Islands.
Tenerife success and the Spain national team
Miñambres spent a decade playing for Tenerife, remaining with the club until the end of his professional playing career in 1999. Those years included strong league campaigns and European competition, achievements that occupy an important place in Tenerife’s identity.
The club qualified for the UEFA Cup and reached the competition’s semifinals in the 1996-97 season. Miñambres was part of the squad during that European run, which remains one of Tenerife’s landmark sporting accomplishments.
His performances also brought international recognition. He earned senior caps for Spain and was selected for the squad that travelled to the United States for the 1994 World Cup under coach Javier Clemente.
Although his international career was relatively brief, World Cup selection placed him among the leading Spanish players of his generation. It also gave his career a dimension beyond the club with which he was most strongly associated.
From coaching to sporting direction
After retiring as a player, Miñambres moved into coaching. His managerial career included Tenerife, Hércules, Salamanca and Rayo Vallecano, giving him experience of preparing teams and working under the immediate pressure of results.
He later became particularly associated with the sporting director’s role. At Rayo Vallecano, his work extended beyond the training ground into squad construction and recruitment, responsibilities that would increasingly define his professional reputation.
Miñambres joined Celta Vigo as sporting director in 2016 and moved to Levante in 2022. These appointments continued a career focused on assessing players, planning squads and connecting a club’s sporting ambitions with its available resources.
Leadership and the human side of football

His connection with Tenerife has also extended into club leadership as president. That role carries a broader responsibility than playing or coaching, encompassing the environment in which the squad and staff work.
His emphasis on the squad’s need for psychological support highlights the human demands of professional football. Confidence, pressure and emotional wellbeing sit alongside tactical preparation and physical fitness, rather than outside them.
Miñambres’s career is therefore more than a record of appearances or appointments. It spans the dressing room, the dugout and executive decision-making, with Tenerife providing the strongest thread through a long working life in Spanish football.
