The modern state takes its name from Oyo, the historic Yoruba kingdom that developed into one of West Africa’s influential empires. The Oyo Empire drew strength from its political organisation, trade networks and military power, including its use of cavalry.
The Alaafin was the empire’s ruler, operating within a system that also gave important responsibilities to chiefs and other institutions. This history remains central to Oyo’s cultural identity, although the former empire and the present Nigerian state are not the same geographical or political entity.
Old Oyo, the former imperial capital, declined amid conflicts during the nineteenth century. A new Oyo town subsequently developed farther south and became the seat of the Alaafin. The survival of this institution helps connect the region’s past with its present.
Oyo State was created on 3 February 1976 following the division of Nigeria’s former Western State. Its boundaries changed in 1991 when Osun State was carved out of it.
Geography, people and government
Located in southwestern Nigeria, Oyo borders Kwara, Osun and Ogun states, as well as the Republic of Benin. Its landscape includes forest and savanna environments, supporting different patterns of farming and settlement.
Ibadan is the state capital and its largest urban centre. Other important towns include Ogbomoso, Oyo, Iseyin, Saki and Eruwa. Together, these places reflect the diversity of communities across the state.
Yoruba people form the majority of the population, and Yoruba is widely spoken. English serves official and educational purposes. Islam, Christianity and indigenous religious traditions all contribute to the state’s social and cultural life.
Like other Nigerian states, Oyo has an elected governor and a state House of Assembly. It is divided into 33 local government areas. Traditional rulers retain cultural significance alongside these constitutional structures.
Education, agriculture and commerce
Education is one of Oyo’s strongest national associations. The University of Ibadan began in 1948 as University College, Ibadan, and became an independent university in 1962. It holds a foundational place in the history of university education in Nigeria.
The state also hosts other higher education institutions, including Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in Ogbomoso. Research organisations such as the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in Ibadan reinforce its reputation as a centre of knowledge.
Agriculture remains an important part of the economy. Farmers grow crops including cassava, maize, yam and cocoa, while livestock production and agricultural trading support livelihoods across rural communities.
Ibadan’s markets, transport connections and businesses link agricultural areas with urban consumers. Trade, public administration, education and services contribute to the economy alongside manufacturing and small enterprises.

Oyo’s cultural heritage is visible in festivals, music, oral traditions, royal institutions and craftsmanship. Iseyin is particularly associated with aso oke, the handwoven cloth used for important Yoruba ceremonies and celebrations.
Landmarks include Ibadan’s Cocoa House and Old Oyo National Park, which combines wildlife habitats with historical remains linked to the former imperial capital.
Oyo’s lasting importance comes from this combination of historical depth and everyday activity. Its towns preserve distinctive traditions while its schools, markets and creative communities continue to shape Nigerian life.
