That is the concern the Independent National Electoral Commission is raising ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. INEC says artificial intelligence has made it cheaper and much easier to create fake audio, videos and images that can be difficult to identify as false.

The commission’s warning goes beyond fake videos. According to INEC, AI could also be used to create highly targeted messages, allowing different groups of voters to receive conflicting narratives about the same issue.

For the average Nigerian, this means the information on your phone may require more scrutiny than ever. A forwarded WhatsApp voice note, a viral TikTok video or a screenshot claiming to be from INEC could influence opinions before anyone checks whether it is genuine.

INEC says its public affairs officers are being trained to improve verification, escalation and communication as the 2027 elections approach. The training will also cover the responsible use of AI, including its limitations, confidentiality and the need for verification.

The message is simple: in an environment where technology can create convincing content within minutes, verification has become part of communication.
