All Souls' Day is a day of prayer and remembrance in the Roman Catholic Church. Its formal liturgical name is the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, and it is observed annually on November 2, immediately after All Saints' Day.

Catholics commonly mark the occasion by attending Mass, praying for deceased relatives and friends, and visiting graves. While local customs vary, the central purpose is the same: to commend the dead to God's mercy and express hope in eternal life.

What All Souls' Day means

The observance is closely connected to Catholic teaching about purgatory. In that teaching, people who die in God's grace but still need purification undergo that purification before entering the fullness of heaven.

Purgatory is understood as distinct from hell. Those undergoing purification are assured of salvation. Catholics believe that prayers offered by the living, especially the celebration of Mass, can help the departed.

All Souls' Day also reflects belief in the communion of saints, the spiritual union of the faithful on earth, those undergoing purification and those in heaven. Death, in this understanding, does not end the bonds of love and prayer within the Church.

Although remembrance can bring sadness, the observance is not intended only as an expression of grief. Its prayers emphasize mercy, resurrection and the Christian hope that death is not the end of life.

How the observance developed

Prayer for the dead long predates the establishment of All Souls' Day as a fixed annual observance. Early Christians remembered those who had died and included prayers for them in their worship.

A major step in the development of the observance came through the Benedictine monastery of Cluny, in what is now France. In the late 10th century, its abbot, Odilo, established a commemoration of the faithful departed on November 2 for monasteries under Cluny's influence.

The practice gradually spread beyond that monastic network and became established more widely in the Western Church. Its place beside All Saints' Day created a sequence of observances focused on the Christian understanding of life beyond death.

How Catholics observe the day

Mass is central to All Souls' Day. Parishes offer prayers for the departed, and worshippers may ask for deceased loved ones to be remembered at Mass. Some churches also provide books or lists in which people can record names for remembrance.

Visits to cemeteries are another familiar practice. Families may clean graves, place flowers, light candles where permitted and pray together. In many communities, these visits connect religious belief with the care of family memory across generations.

The Catholic Church also encourages prayer for the dead throughout November. All Souls' Day therefore sits within a broader period of remembrance rather than being the only occasion on which Catholics pray for those who have died.

All Souls' Day and related traditions

All Saints' Day, on November 1, honors all the saints in heaven, including those who have never been formally canonized. All Souls' Day focuses on prayer for the faithful departed who still need purification. The two observances are closely linked but have different purposes.

They also fall near Halloween, whose name derives from the eve of All Saints' Day. Modern Halloween celebrations, however, are not the same as the Church's commemoration of the dead.

In Mexico and some other communities, Day of the Dead traditions overlap with November 1 and 2. These celebrations have their own cultural histories and customs, including family altars and offerings. They should not be treated as simply another name for All Souls' Day.

Across these varied settings, All Souls' Day retains its distinctive Catholic focus: prayer for the dead, care for their memory and trust in God's mercy.
