Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress was declared winner of Nigeria's presidential election, defeating the incumbent Goodluck Jonathan by roughly two and a half million votes.
President Jonathan telephoned his opponent to concede before the final tallies were announced, a step widely credited with defusing tension after a tightly contested campaign fought on security, corruption and the economy.
It was the first time since the return to civilian rule in 1999 that an opposition candidate had defeated a sitting Nigerian president, and the transfer of power was completed at a ceremony in Abuja in May.
