Ajman is one of the seven emirates that form the United Arab Emirates. Situated on the Arabian Gulf, it is the smallest emirate by land area. Its capital, also called Ajman, is closely connected to neighbouring Sharjah and the wider urban corridor extending towards Dubai.

Fishing, pearling and maritime trade shaped its early economy. Modern Ajman has developed around housing, commerce, manufacturing and services, while its waterfront and historic centre retain visible links to its coastal past.

Ajman consists of a main coastal territory and two inland exclaves, Manama and Masfout. These separate areas give the emirate a more varied landscape than its compact urban coastline might suggest.
Manama lies inland to the east, while Masfout is associated with the Hajar mountain landscape near Hatta. Both offer a contrast to the capital’s apartment buildings, commercial streets and beachside developments.
The coastal city is the centre of government, business and everyday urban life. Its corniche, beaches and waterfront hotels are among its best-known features. Proximity to Sharjah and Dubai also makes Ajman part of a much larger network of employment, transport and residential communities.
History and leadership
Ajman’s history is closely tied to the Al Nuaimi ruling family and the maritime communities of the Gulf. Before the formation of the UAE, it was one of the Trucial States, whose rulers maintained treaty relationships with Britain.
The emirate joined the United Arab Emirates when the federation was established in 1971. Like the other emirates, it retains its own ruler and local administration within the federal system.
Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi became ruler of Ajman in 1981. As ruler, he is a member of the UAE’s Federal Supreme Council, the body comprising the rulers of all seven emirates.
Ajman Museum, housed in a historic fort that once served as the ruler’s residence, provides an introduction to the emirate’s past. Its displays explore subjects including archaeology, traditional occupations and domestic life, helping explain the community that existed before rapid urban development.
Trade and economic change
The sea supported Ajman through fishing, pearl diving and trade long before the modern federation. Traditional wooden boat building is another important part of its maritime heritage.
Its economy now extends across manufacturing, trading, construction, property and services. Ajman Port and Ajman Free Zone support commercial activity and connect the emirate with wider business networks.
Tourism draws on its beaches, resorts and cultural attractions. The emirate offers a smaller-scale coastal setting alongside access to the larger visitor and business centres nearby.
Education also forms part of its modern identity. Ajman University is among its established institutions, bringing students and academic activity into the city’s economic and social life.
Housing and everyday life
Ajman is home to Emirati citizens and a diverse expatriate population. Its residential appeal includes housing that is often more affordable than comparable options in Dubai, although costs vary by neighbourhood and property type.

Some residents commute to jobs in neighbouring emirates. This links local life to regional traffic patterns and makes road access, journey times and parking important considerations when choosing a home.
Residential parking shortages are among the pressures associated with Ajman’s urban growth. In densely developed neighbourhoods, demand for spaces can complicate daily routines. The issue sits within the broader challenge of matching housing development with transport access and supporting infrastructure.
Ajman’s identity rests on this balance between continuity and change. Its fort, maritime traditions and inland communities preserve a distinctive history, while its residential districts and businesses anchor its role in the modern UAE.
