Wood was born in Long Beach, California, and developed into a promising basketball prospect during his school years. He attended Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada, a program known for preparing talented players for major college basketball.
He remained in Nevada for college, joining the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Across two seasons with the UNLV Runnin' Rebels, he developed his offensive game and became an increasingly important presence around the basket.
His sophomore season brought particular attention to his rebounding, shot blocking and scoring potential. He earned second-team All-Mountain West recognition before declaring for the 2015 NBA draft. Despite his physical tools and college production, he was not selected.
A Difficult Route Into the NBA
Going undrafted did not end Wood's pursuit of a professional career. He joined the Philadelphia 76ers and began working to turn his potential into a lasting NBA role.
His early years included time with the Charlotte Hornets and Milwaukee Bucks, along with assignments in the NBA's developmental league. Playing opportunities were often limited, and he moved between organizations without immediately finding a stable place in a rotation.
A stint with the New Orleans Pelicans gave him a stronger opportunity to display his scoring and rebounding. He then joined the Detroit Pistons, where his production helped change perceptions of him from an intriguing prospect to a player capable of handling a larger role.
That progression became a defining part of his story. Rather than arriving as a highly drafted player with a clear path to minutes, Wood had to build his reputation through smaller opportunities.
Breakthrough and Established NBA Roles
Wood's development in Detroit helped lead to a move to the Houston Rockets in 2020. In Houston, he took on a prominent offensive role and demonstrated that he could produce consistently against NBA competition.
He was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in 2022, joining a team built around Luka Doncic. His ability to finish near the rim and shoot from outside offered different options alongside a ball-dominant playmaker.
Wood later signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2023. That move added another major franchise to a career already shaped by changes in teammates, coaching systems and expectations.
Playing Style and Public Profile
Wood can play both power forward and center. Offensively, his appeal comes from his ability to score in several ways: finishing passes near the basket, attacking openings and stepping beyond the three-point line.
His shooting can pull opposing big men away from the rim, while his reach and mobility make him a target for lob passes. Defensive consistency and the demands of different frontcourt roles have also been recurring points of discussion around his game.

Outside basketball, Wood has attracted entertainment coverage, including being photographed dining with Amber Rose. Such an appearance does not, by itself, establish the nature of a personal relationship.
His central public identity remains rooted in basketball. From an undrafted beginning to substantial NBA roles, Wood's career is a story of persistence, offensive talent and the continuing challenge of finding the right fit.
