His performances attracted attention from Portugal, but it was Benfica, Sporting’s Lisbon rival, that secured his move. He arrived in Portugal while still a teenager and began playing for Benfica’s first team in 1961.
Becoming a Benfica great
Eusébio joined a side already establishing itself among Europe’s strongest clubs. Under coach Béla Guttmann, Benfica had won the European Cup in 1961, breaking Real Madrid’s early dominance of the competition.
He played a decisive role when Benfica retained the trophy in 1962. Facing Real Madrid in the final in Amsterdam, Benfica won 5-3, with Eusébio scoring twice. The performance established the young forward as a major international star.
Over his long Benfica career, he helped the club win 11 Portuguese league titles and five Portuguese Cups. Benfica also reached further European Cup finals during his years there, although the 1962 triumph remained his only victory in the competition.
His individual achievements matched that team success. He won the Ballon d’Or in 1965 and the European Golden Shoe in 1968 and 1973. More than a prolific scorer, he could create openings through direct running, close control and the threat of shots from distance.
Portugal and the 1966 World Cup
Eusébio’s most famous international performances came at the 1966 World Cup in England. Portugal arrived as tournament newcomers but emerged as one of its outstanding teams.
He scored nine goals to finish as the tournament’s leading scorer. Two came in Portugal’s 3-1 group-stage victory over Brazil, the defending champions.
His defining match was the quarter-final against North Korea. Portugal fell 3-0 behind before Eusébio scored four times to lead a remarkable recovery. Portugal won 5-3 and advanced to face England in the semi-final.
England won that match 2-1, with Eusébio scoring Portugal’s goal from the penalty spot. Portugal then defeated the Soviet Union to finish third, with Eusébio again converting a penalty. He ended his international career with 41 goals in 64 appearances.
Later career and lasting influence
After leaving Benfica in 1975, Eusébio played for clubs in North America and Portugal before retiring. Those later spells broadened his career, but his reputation remained inseparable from Benfica and the Portuguese national team.

He continued to represent Benfica as an ambassador and remained a respected presence in football. A statue outside the club’s stadium became a lasting tribute to his contribution.
Eusébio died on 5 January 2014, aged 71. His legacy rests on both extraordinary goalscoring and the way he elevated the teams around him. For Benfica, he helped define a golden era; for Portugal, he set an international standard that later generations would seek to match.
