Imagine driving through a Nigerian checkpoint and seeing someone move freely because he looks like a senior police officer. That was reportedly the identity allegedly used by a 49-year-old man to move illicit drugs until NDLEA operatives caught up with him in Delta State.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has intercepted more than 1.3 million pills of tramadol and other opioids, alongside about 6,000kg of cannabis, in operations across several states and the Federal Capital Territory. The agency puts the combined street value of the seized drugs at more than ₦3.4 billion.

Among the arrests was Innocent Ekpe, who was allegedly found with 292.48kg of skunk in a Toyota Sienna along the Benin-Onitsha Expressway in Asaba, Delta State. NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi said investigators discovered that Ekpe had allegedly been presenting himself as a Deputy Superintendent of Police named Godwin Emeka, using a forged police identification card to avoid scrutiny at checkpoints. Another suspect, 39-year-old Nduka Joseph, was also arrested.

In Lagos, the agency reported another major interception at Tin-Can Island Port. According to Babafemi, 1,200 parcels of Canadian Loud weighing 603.75kg and valued at ₦1.81 billion were found concealed inside 31 black bags in two Toyota Sienna vehicles loaded into a 40-foot container from Montreal, Canada.
The operations also extended to Edo, Niger, Abuja and Gombe, with NDLEA reporting recoveries including cannabis, methamphetamine, tramadol, codeine syrup, firearms and nitrous oxide. In Lagos alone, 48,900 tramadol pills were recovered from one suspect, while another 59kg of cannabis was intercepted at a logistics company.

For an ordinary Nigerian, stories like this are a reminder that what happens in our roads, ports, neighbourhoods and businesses can have consequences far beyond what we see.
