Éder biography: Early life and beginnings

Born Éderzito António Macedo Lopes on 22 December 1987 in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, Éder moved to Portugal as a child. He spent part of his childhood in a care home in Coimbra, a formative background far removed from the elite football environment he would later enter.

He developed as a young player with ADC Adémia before beginning his senior career with Oliveira do Hospital. A subsequent spell at Tourizense provided another step towards the professional game.

In 2008, he joined Académica, the Coimbra club competing in Portugal's top division. His years there gave him sustained experience at a higher level and established him as a striker capable of progressing beyond the domestic game's smaller clubs.

Building a club career

Éder moved to Braga in 2012. Playing for a club regularly involved in European competition brought greater visibility and helped consolidate his place in the Portuguese national-team picture.

His game relied on strength, reach and the ability to occupy central defenders. He could offer teammates a direct passing option, contest aerial balls and hold possession while others moved forward. He was not a prolific scorer at every club, but his physical presence gave coaches a distinct attacking option.

In 2015, he joined Swansea City in the English Premier League. The move proved difficult, with limited opportunities and no competitive goals for the Welsh club. A loan to Lille in early 2016 offered a fresh start, and he subsequently joined the French club permanently.

Éder later played for Lokomotiv Moscow, initially on loan from Lille. He was part of the side that won the Russian league title in the 2017-18 season and also enjoyed Russian Cup success. His later career included a spell with Al-Raed in Saudi Arabia.

Portugal and the Euro 2016 final

Éder made his senior Portugal debut in 2012 and was selected for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He remained an option in attack as Portugal prepared for the European Championship two years later.

At Euro 2016, he was a squad player rather than a regular starter. Portugal reached the final against hosts France at the Stade de France, where an early injury forced captain Cristiano Ronaldo off the pitch.

Coach Fernando Santos introduced Éder from the bench during the second half. With the match still goalless in extra time, the striker provided its decisive intervention.

In the 109th minute, he held off a challenge, moved into shooting space and struck a low right-footed shot from outside the penalty area past France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. Portugal protected the 1-0 lead to become European champions.
